December is a month filled with holidays and a time to slow down and reflect on what and who is important to us and why. Tis the season of giving. This week, let’s reflect how we can help others.
Time and Services
First, we can volunteer and donate our time and services. There are many organizations who could use extra help. We all have skills and expertise we can share, such as marketing, fundraising, customer service, or pulling together spreadsheets. And organizations need extra bodies to put together care packages, cook a meal, or help at an event such as a food drive.
We can give something of ourselves, such as donating blood or walk in a 5k to bring awareness to an organization. We can visit a senior center, read at the library, or assist at a school, hospital, animal shelter, or clean up a park. There are many ways we volunteer our time.
“Volunteers don’t necessarily have the time; they have the heart.” — Elizabeth Andrew
Tis the Season of Donating Items
Second, we could clean out our closets and donate items we no longer use or need. I just did this, and it’s a great feeling to know that someone else will get great use and joy on an item that’s just sitting unused in storage. Plus, having room in closets and cupboards is freeing. When I open a filled cupboard, all that clutter can be overwhelming. But when it’s clean and there is space around everything, I feel lighter. As a result, having more space in my home makes me more relaxed and peaceful. And it’s true what they say, “One person’s junk is another’s treasure.” Give away some of your junk and turn them into another’s treasures. And it’ll make room for the gifts you are about to receive.
Donate Money or Purchases
Third, we can donate money or purchase an item from a non-profit. Find an organization that you believe in and donate to help their cause. We can give money or buying something from their website. Some non-profits have items you can buy which make exceptional gifts. It’s a win-win for everyone! Tis the season of giving.
“I have found that among its other benefits, giving liberates the soul of the giver.” — Maya Angelou
When you assist others, the benefit is not just for them, but it’s also a gift for you. Make your heart happy and have a wonderful giving season!
