Are the windows in your house or car dirty? Or do your eyes glasses need cleaning? Doesn’t it feel great when they are clean and you can see clearly? It looks like a whole new world, doesn’t it? Everything seems fresh, new and happy. It is the same analogy when you look through your eyes with the same thoughts and views that you have had for many years or maybe your whole life. What would happen if you “cleaned” your thoughts and opened up your eyes (and mind) to look at the world differently?
You may say “Well I haven’t changed. It is the world that has changed?” And you know you are right. But if the world has changed, shouldn’t you change too? Psychologist Carl Jung termed the phrase “Collective Unconscious” to explain that the beliefs we hold are based on what others have taught us. Do you know most the beliefs you carry were formed by age 7? Are you now the same person you were at 7? Maybe you need to look at some of those old beliefs and see if they are truly yours or beliefs you learned from someone else and continue to believe.
“Change is the law of life. And those you only look to the past or present are certain to miss the future.” – John F. Kennedy
Some of the old beliefs and thoughts that we have held on to for these many years are just not accurate anymore. An example of an inaccurate thought would be when we thought the earth was flat and the center of our solar system. But we found out that the world is actually round and the center of our solar system is the sun. The more we learn, the more we stumble across something that has never even crossed our minds before. Twenty years ago you probably never had the belief that you could use a cell phone, especially one that could take and send pictures, play music or give you directions and answer questions. How do you do that Siri?
“No matter what people tell you, words and ideas can change the world.” – Robin Williams
Our old beliefs can keep us from growing. The world is changing and we need to reevaluate our beliefs from time to time. Are they still relevant? Are they holding me back? Will changing my old beliefs help me to move forward and grow? Change is good. It pushes us to learn more and get out of our comfort zone.
“Change your thoughts and you change your world.” – Norman Vincent Peale
If we come into our lives with open eyes (and minds), we may look at the world a bit differently. It is like after the rain has gone how crystal clear everything looks. The sky just seems so blue! If we come from the place in our heart instead of our mind, we would be more empathic and loving to others. We literally would see the world in a different way. So open your hearts and your minds and question what you “see”. Let the rain clean those windows. Be open to change and new possibilities. Because in those new possibilities you might find a better, happier you!
“I can see clearly now the rain is gone” by Johnny Nash.
