Hygge fireSpending time with friends and family are very important to feeling hygge. The Danish even have a name for family Friday –  Fredagshygge! Meik’s book he says “Hygge you have on Fridays is Fredagshygge and usually means the family curling up on the couch together watching TV.” Or you can play a game. Fredagshygge is family time.

Socialization is very hygge so feel your hygge with friends, family, or coworkers by meeting up for coffee or invite a few people over for dinner. Socializing in small groups are what Danes prefer says Meik. And whatever you do, keep it simple. Drinking a hot beverage by a fire is a great way to socialize. Get hygge by having a game night or making a meal with friends. Remember, it is the simple pleasures which are best.

Sunday hygge also has its own name – Sondagshygge! This is a time to rest and relax says Meik. Sondagshygge is time to hygge up with a good book, watch a movie, or listen to some music to comfort the soul. Grab your favorite blanket, make some tea, and take in a deep breath and breathe out a sigh of relief. Sit still in silence in your Hyggekrog space for a few minutes. Feel the tranquility as your release all thoughts. Invite your pet into your hyggekrog space or take a walk in nature. You earned this relaxation time so enjoy!

Now that you have learned how to feel hygge, take this feeling along with you on your next trip. Plan a vacation where you can relax and experience all you have learned this month. What is your idea of a hygge vacation? A trip to a mountain cabin, fishing on a river, or a beach house on the ocean? Somewhere in nature is ideal. Of course, this vacation is best to do with friends or family. That is so hygge of you!

With all the hustle and bustle of our lives, hygge is a reminder to slow down and be grateful for our surroundings and the people who make life more enjoyable. Life is not about the things we have but the feelings we get when we feel safe and loved. So spread a little hygge everyday and see how your life and the lives you touch will improve for the better.

Thank you for coming along with me on this hygge journey. I hope this has given you inspiration to slow down and enjoy the comforts of hygge. Life is meant to be shared, so spend time with others that lift you up and accept you as you are. I know a little hygge can make for a happier, fulfilled, and more peaceful life.
