Purpose Takeaways

  • Purpose isn’t lost; you’ve just disconnected from it
  • Clarity comes from action, not overthinking
  • Small aligned steps create meaningful direction

You don’t lose your purpose; you drift from it. It’s easy to when life gets loud and busy as your responsibilities pile up. Expectations, whether they’re yours or others start to shape your decisions and swallows your time. But not all it lost. I’m here to tell you that you can begin to rediscover your purpose today.

“You’ve got to find yourself first. Everything else will follow.” — Charles de Lint

Most of us have experienced a time where we think, “How did I get here?” I know I have. I want you to know that this feeling isn’t failure; it’s awareness. And awareness is where rediscovering your purpose begins.

I don’t believe purpose is something you find once. It’s something you reconnect with again and again. And the purpose may need revision. After all, who you were at twenty is not the same person you are now.

Let’s dig in.

7 Simple Ways to Rediscover Your Purpose

1. Pause and Create Purpose Space

You can’t hear yourself if your life is too loud and your mind’s focused on what you need to do. This keeps your brain in the “reactive mode,” not a reflective state of mind. What you need is a quiet space.

Try this:

  • 5 minutes of silence (no phone, no technology, no input)
  • Sit with one question: What feels off?
  • Don’t fix it, just notice

Clarity doesn’t come from more doing. It comes from creating a quiet space so you can reflect. When you become aware of the noise that’s going on inside of you, you can start addressing what feels off. This is where the shift starts.

2. Revisit What Energizes You

Purpose leaves clues and energy is one of them. Whatever lights you up and gives you energy can be a sign of purpose.

Ask yourself:

  • What activities engage me so much that I lose track of time?
  • What conversations or information light me up?
  • What do I naturally care about?

This aligns with flow theory (being in the zone) from Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. We feel most fulfilled when we’re fully engaged. In this state, we’re highly focused, have increased motivation and concentration, and we find enjoyment with the process. We can be so consumed that time doesn’t seem to exist.

Action step:

  • Write down 3 moments this week that gave you energy.
  • Look for patterns.
  • Is there something that lights a spark in you?

Purpose can be something you are passionate about, but not always. Sometimes it’s just what brings you energy and excitement. For me, it’s writing. I can get so lost in the work that time becomes irrelevant. Soon, two or three hours can go by quickly.

3. Audit Your Current Life

It’s good to check in with yourself once in a while, especially when you feel drained or unfulfilled. Sometimes you’re not lost, you’re just misaligned. With so much on your to-do list, we can slowly get off track from our purpose and goals. So here are some tips to help you discover what aligns and what doesn’t.

Look at:

  • Your time
  • Your habits
  • Your commitments

Ask:

  • What feels heavy?
  • What feels forced?
  • What feels like me?

Action step:

  • Keep: what feels aligned
  • Adjust: what feels off
  • Release: what drains you

Your life should reflect your values and what’s important to you, not just your obligations. This isn’t to say that you don’t perform your obligations. We all have stuff we need to do that we may not want to, like cleaning the house. But if your obligations are eating away your life, are there things you can let go or find someone else to do so you can make space for you.

4. Challenge the Story You’re Telling Yourself

Are you repeating a story that disconnects you from your purpose?

Common thoughts:

  • “It’s too late”
  • “I should already know”
  • “I missed my chance”

Your thoughts and feelings shape your behavior, otherwise known as cognitive behavior therapy or CBT. The concept is that it’s not the situation, but our interpretation of it that creates our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. So, let’s Flip the Script and reframe the story.

Old story: “I’m behind.”

Flip the Script and reframe it to: “I’m not behind. I’m learning on my own timeline.”

Action step:

  • Catch 1 limiting belief today
  • Reframe it into something more empowering

Life Shift: Change the sentence. Change the direction.

5. Take Small, Aligned Action

Purpose doesn’t come from thinking alone; it comes from movement. Action brings clarity and builds confidence. When you start taking action, you discover steps on how to proceed. And the more you do, even when you make mistakes, the more confidence gets built.

Try this:

  • Reach out to someone doing what you’re curious about
  • Start something small (write, create, explore)
  • Test, don’t commit yet

It’s not until we try something that we realize if we like it or not. I read a story of a couple who wanted to own a bed-and-breakfast. They tried it first by working at one for a weekend. Do you know what they found out? Owning a B&B was not for them. Taking a test run is a great way to figure out if it’s right for you.

Action step:

  • Take one small step today. This isn’t about perfection, just forward movement.

Most people don’t “find” their purpose. They discover it through action. You don’t know until you try.

6. Reconnect to Who You Are Becoming

Purpose isn’t tied to your past. Maybe it was something you wanted when you were younger, but you’ve changed and are no longer that person. Purpose is about connecting to your future self and who you want to become.

Ask:

  • Who do I want to become?
  • How do I want to feel in my life?
  • What matters most now (not past expectations)?

Your brain rewires based on repeated thoughts, regardless of their truth, and habits. And these turn into identity-based beliefs.

Action step:

  • Write one identity statement: “I am becoming someone who…”

Note: “I am” is a very powerful statement. Whatever follows I am states that is what you are. For example, if you say, “I am having a good day” or “I am having a bad day,” then you’ll find information to validate that statement. And the statement does not even need to be true. It’s just our perspective.

Your purpose evolves as you evolve. Keep seeking and connect to who you are becoming.

7. Focus on Contribution, Not Perfection

Purpose grows when it’s shared. When you connect with others, you expand the impact of your purpose. Therefore, you don’t need to have everything figured out to begin. Just start.

Ask:

  • Who can I help right now?
  • What can I share from where I am?

Even your struggles can become someone else’s clarity. When I’ve shared my challenges, I’ve discovered others have had a similar experience and my story has helped then to prevent or help them with their problems.

Action step:

  • Share one insight, story, or lesson this week

Your purpose expands when it moves beyond you.

Purpose is Built

Purpose isn’t one big answer or a one and done. It’s a series of small alignments.

It’s built through the 3 A’s:

  • Awareness
  • Action
  • Adjustment

And most importantly, adjustment is a necessary step and gives you permission to grow.

Not everything is going to go as planned. After all, there will be obstacles and wrong turns along the way. And that’s okay. It’s in the doing, the action, that we become aware if a change is direction is needed. This is where we find out if we need to revise or let go.

If you’re not sure what to do, circle back to your purpose and ask, “Is this action leading me towards my purpose or away from it?” The answer will give you clarity on what to do next.

Your Next Step

Simple and powerful:

  • Pause
  • Ask: What feels true for me right now?
  • Take one small step toward it

That’s how you begin again.
