Doubt: The Inner Critic That Almost Stopped Me From Writing

Doubt

Estimated reading time: 6 minutes

Key Takeaways

  • Doubt often creeps in when progress feels unclear, leading to questions about one’s purpose and audience.
  • The voice of doubt whispers logical reasons to quit, yet it’s essential to differentiate between feeling stuck and truly wanting to stop.
  • Small reflections on motivation can reignite the growth mindset, shifting negativity into constructive thoughts.
  • Most people quit when growth feels hard, unclear, or uncomfortable; recognizing this can be a sign and guide you to persist instead.
  • Understanding that feeling stuck is part of growth can empower you to continue moving forward despite uncertainties.

Doubt crept into my life last year. Not in a dramatic, throw-it-all-away kind of way. It wasn’t a big, emotional moment where I declared, “That’s it, I’m done.” The whisper was quieter than that and more like a subtle questioning. It’s the kind that sneaks in when you’re tired, when things feel unclear or not going your way, or when progress doesn’t look the way you thought it would. I’ve been there.

Here are some questions that started stacking up:

  • Is this working?
  • Does this even matter?
  • Is anyone actually reading what I’m writing?

If I’m being honest, it wasn’t about the writing. I love doing it. I realized it was about doubt. Doubt in myself and my work.

When the Voice of Doubt Gets Louder

You know that voice. The one that sounds logical. Even reasonable and factual. You’ve done enough. Maybe this isn’t “it” anymore. Why keep going?

The voice didn’t yell. It whispered and sent a nudge of doubt. And somehow, that made it more convincing. Because it didn’t feel like fear. It felt like the truth. And for a moment, I almost listened.

The Real Truth (That Took Me a Minute to See)

What I realized—slowly, and not all at once—was this: It wasn’t that I wanted to stop writing. It was that I was tired of feeling stuck. And being stuck is a completely different problem. This is where people misread the moment.

They think: “I’ve outgrown this,” “This isn’t working,” “This isn’t meant for me,” or “It’s time to move on.”

But sometimes? It’s none of the above. If this happens to you, you’re not misaligned; doubt is creeping in.

What Actually Kept Me Going

It wasn’t one big breakthrough or instant clarity. It was small, quiet things. The kind I almost overlooked like:

  • Remembering why I started.
  • Seeing one message from someone who needed my words.
  • Realizing growth doesn’t always feel exciting; it often feels uncertain.
  • Knowing if I stopped, I would be abandoning a version of me I worked to become.

And that last one hit me the hardest. Because it wasn’t just about writing anymore. It was about my identity.

The Skill That Changed Everything

Here’s the real shift: Remembering I had built the habit of rewriting my own thoughts. Even though I teach this stuff, somehow doubt made me question myself. This wasn’t about ignoring the doubt or pretending everything was great, because sometimes it’s not. It’s about choosing a truer direction.

Instead of: “I don’t know if this is working.”
I shifted to:“I’m still building something that matters.”

Instead of: “Maybe I should stop.”
I chose: “What if I’m closer than I think?”

That small shift changed everything. Because your thoughts don’t just reflect your reality, they create it.

Why Most People Quit (and It’s Not What You Think)

We like to believe we quit because something isn’t meant for us. But more often, the truth behind why we quit is because, it gets hard or unclear, it stop feeling exciting, it asks us to grow, or we feel unworthy.

The last one really encompasses all of them. The feeling of unworthiness is crippling. However, it’s just a thought. And if you’ve been following me for a while, you know that just because you have a thought, it doesn’t mean it’s true.

Instead, we should focus on growth. But sometimes growth doesn’t feel like progress. If feels like doubt, resistance, and questioning everything.

That’s the part no one talks about enough. The doubts and questions for which we don’t have the answers can cause us to resist, and sometimes wanting to give up. But like this Forbes article shares, we have to stop selling ourselves short and embrace the doubt.

So I Kept Going Despite the Doubt

Not perfectly or with a clear roadmap. Or with constant rah-rah motivation. But showing up consistently and creating kinder self-talk. And this inner dialogue reframing, along with small action steps, moved me forward.

It wasn’t confidence or certainty. It was taking one step, one post, one page at a time.

If You’re in This Moment Right Now

Pause and reflect before you walk away.

Ask yourself:

  • Am I done or just discouraged?
  • Is this not for me or is this a sign of growth?
  • Am I quitting the path or escaping discomfort?
  • What do I really want?

There is wisdom in letting go. But there’s also power in staying. And knowing the difference is where everything changes.

A Thought About Doubt to Take With You

You don’t need to have it all figured out or feel 100% sure. If it’s something that still matters to you, then don’t walk away. Even if it feels messy, slow, or uncertain. Because sometimes you’re not stuck. You’re just right before the shift, the growth.

Let’s Make This Real

Think about something in your life right now whether it’s a goal, a dream, or a direction you’ve been questioning.

Now ask: Am I actually done, just uncomfortable, or lacking clarity? Be honest, because this answer will tell you what you need to know. Sit with it to see if it’s your intuition or the inner critic trying to stay in the comfort zone where it feels safe. Because growth lies beyond the comfort zone and away from the safe harbor into something unknown.

Now may be the time to become the captain of your ship and steer it in the direction of new shores. You may not see land yet, but know it’s there. It just may take longer than you expected, or the path doesn’t look like you imagine. But growth is worth it and it can be one you’re your best experiences yet.

And I’d love to hear from you.
